The KapKids Project
The Child Orphanage is for kids in Kathmandu, Nepal, and most people in the West wouldn't use it for much more than a gardening shed.
But it's home to 29 children aged four to 12. They eat, sleep play and do everything else in one tiny room with bamboo walls. The three beds they share also double as benches.
The kids in Child Orphanage get a free education in a nearby school, but that's where it ends.

Meet Nisha

run p2pnet from my home in the small village of Lake Cowichan on Vancouver
Island in British Columbia, Canada. The nearest big town is Duncan
about half an hour away. And that's where a friend of mine, Nisha
Demers, lives.
She's a Nepali orphan raised by Lorraine Demers and she's a terrific person - bright and funny. She's studying to be a nurse so she can go to Nepal and help.
Back in January, she went to there to do some trekking. But because of the political situation and bad weather, ended up stationary in Kathmandu where she has friends.
They took her to Child Orphanage and it blew her away. So she donated the money she was going to use for her holiday to the orphanage.
Nisha and I were talking about what a hell of a situation those kids are in and how fortunate we are to have what we have. They have no money for even the barest essentials such as food, clothing, blankets, school supplies ---- or even for doctors and medicine
Worse, when the kids reach the age of 12 they have to leave the orphanage, which is no great shakes to begin with. Where do they end up? On the streets or working for someone, even at their age.
So we decided to try to help the Kapan Kids and thought a donations

page would be a good idea.
I mentioned the project to Ernesto, who runs Torrentfreak over in Holland, and he immediately volunteered to register the url and organise the hosting.
The proceeds will go into a bank account maintained solely by Nisha so all of the money will be funnelled directly to the orphanage. Nothing, and we mean nothing, is being hived off for 'expenses,' as happens with so many of these efforts.
Nor are we looking for corporate contributions with advertising strings attached.
Here's the situation
In the short term, we plan to provide a stream of money so the existing building can be improved and upgraded and the kids can be properly fed and clothed.
In the longer term, we'll collect enough cash to build a KapKids resource centre with an online connection and at least one full-time staff member.
More important, it'll also be a place for children 12 and over to live until they can find somewhere permanent.

We'll also be looking for other online ways for people to make a donation. If you have any ideas on that, please let us know.
But not everyone likes online e-payments which, of course, also skim 'X' amounts off the top. So Gale Pepin, who manages the Lake Cowichan village post office, has organised a special KapKids.com snail-mail slot for anyone who wants to contribute, but who doesn't like the idea of PayPal, etc.

One more thing ..
Putting a roof over the kids' heads and helping them live like human beings is fine, but more is needed and with that in mind, Nisha and I are hoping to go to Kapan in mid-November (when she has a break from university) so we can do detailed video profiles and text biographies for each kid, as well as a YouTube video on the orphanage and people who keep it going.
We think these will be invaluable as a way to reach people who may want to open their homes to one or more of the children.
They'll be posted in a gallery on the site and p2pnet will feature each kid throughout the year, updating their histories whenever anything happens ---- good or bad.
Neither Nisha nor I have enough money to make the trip and we don't want to tap into donations for the orphanage. So if you know someone you think may be able to help us with that ---- a travel agency or an airline, maybe? ---- please ask them to get in touch.
We're not fussy. We'll go as freight baggage, if need be :)
